Fred R. Cabanas

Fred Cabanas with his Pitts SC2 Special will perform at the Novelis Air Show at Harborfest.

Performer: Fred R. Cabanas

Type: Pitts Special S2-C Civilian Aerobatic Aircraft

About The Performer:

Fred Cabanas started flying at the age of 16 and has accumulated more than 20,000 hours of total flight time. He has earned an Airline Transport Pilot, Multi-Engine, Instrument, Commercial, and Seaplane rating. Fred holds a letter of authorization in the North American T-28, and an Airframe and Power Plant license. He is also an Aerobatic Competency Evaluator, which enables him to issue low-level waivers.

This is his second appearance at Harborfest. His show will include tumbling maneuvers commonly known as “double hammerheads,” “torque rolls” and other eye level precision aerobatics including climbing the aircraft, turning off the engine, and then recovering the spinning and falling aircraft. During his show he will experience G (gravity) forces of 8 positive and 4 negative with speeds from 0 to 215 mph.

About the Aircraft:

The designer if the original Pitts Special aerobatic biplane, Curtis Pitts, could hardly have appreciated that his design would continue in production for more than five decades, and that is would be considered as the definitive aerobatic display flying aircraft.

The prototype of the S1 Pitts flew in September 1944. The original aircraft was of steel tube construction with fabric covering over wooden spars, while the two wings were braced with wire. Power was supplied by a 90-horse power four cylinder Lycoming or Continental engine. Later models were of all metal construction and with higher power engines.
